Smash-and-grab thieves target popular NE Atlanta restaurant

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Bobbie Robinson couldn't believe it when she heard it.

Thieves broke into the restaurant she co-owns in the Sweet Auburn section of northeast Atlanta and stole thousands of dollars in TVs and liquor.

"I just thought ‘here we go again,'" Robinson said.

The break-in is the third time in four months thieves targeted her restaurant.

"We're trying to make ends meet and yet here we go, another unexpected expense," Robinson said.

The burglars used an old, heavy, metal water meter to smash the restaurant's window, then climbed through the broken glass.

Robinson, a small business owner, said the break creates another expense she can ill afford.

"You're talking at least $5,000," Robinson said.

The thieves broke in around 4 a.m. Friday.

Larry Arnold, who lives nearby, said his barking dog woke him up, alerting him to the sound of breaking glass.

"It was loud, it bam, glass scattered everywhere," Arnold said.

Arnold told CBS Atlanta he saw a man break in then work his way back out to a waiting truck.

"He came out with a TV and he went back and got another TV. I saw a pickup truck come around the corner and wait for him," Arnold said.

The robber seemed to be in no hurry, Arnold said.

"He was inside the store at least 15 minutes," Arnold said.

Robinson said she would like to see more police patrols so she doesn't have to worry so much.

"Now we got to beef up on security a little bit on our own. You try to have nice things, but when people see you have nice things, it makes it hard to keep those nice things," Robinson said.
