FAYETTE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Fayetteville police have arrested a former Fayette County High School administrator for stealing funds from the school.

Police said Darren Handley, 48, of Fayetteville, was arrested Tuesday after Fayetteville detectives obtained arrest warrants for him.

Lt. Mike Whitlow told CBS Atlanta News that discrepancies were discovered in several accounts Handley was in charge of in early June.

"He violated a trust that was placed on him by the school," said Whitlow. "He began funneling money from some accounts to other accounts, and eventually to himself."

Handley is charged with two counts of theft by taking fiduciary.

Whitlow said Handley also had access to some civic related accounts separate from the school.

More charges are expected to be filed.

When school leaders learned money was missing they reacted quickly and notified police, according to a Fayette County High School spokesperson.

Darren Handley recently resigned from his position, and the district accepted his resignation.
