Former Fayetteville administrator arrested, investigation continues

Posted: Updated:

CBS Atlanta News has learned another police department may be looking into the case of a former Fayetteville assistant principal arrested Tuesday.

At the same time as Fayetteville police were escorting Darren Handley off to the county jail, it turns out a neighboring police department may have had an eye on him.

A tipster told CBS Atlanta News that the Senoia Police Department is investigating the 48-year-old former educator in connection with money missing from a local civic group.

Senoia detectives wouldn't confirm if Handley is under investigation, just that they are investigating a case similar to the one in Fayetteville.

Lt. Mike Whitlow said their case in Fayetteville is still open.

CBS Atlanta News learned more about the thousands of dollars Handley is accused of taking from Fayette County High School's athletic department.

Whitlow confirmed that the money was likely funneled through a non-profit booster club affiliated with Gym South Gymnastics and Cheer.

"Part of the money that was coming from the high school was going through this booster-club account," said Whitlow.

He said Handley used his position as a volunteer with the booster club to help pad his pockets.

The non-profit has decided not to press charges, but police said this arrest can serve as a reminder to any organization collecting money.

"The key here is he was the sole person responsible for these accounts. So, for lack of a better term, he was keeping the books, but he was the only one that was looking at the books," said Whitlow.
