A park ranger is hospitalized after being shot in the torso at a park that overlooks Lake Lanier late Wednesday night.
The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. at Buford Dam Park off Buford Dam Road.
According to Gwinnett County police, D. P. Wright, 70, approached a woman who was sitting in the driver's seat of a vehicle.
"It was at closing time for the park, which was at 10 p.m.," said Cpl. Jake Smith, a Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman. "He was approaching this vehicle with the intention of just saying, 'Hey, the park is closed, and you need to go.' And there was no kind of confrontation or argument or anything like that between the two of them. She simply produced the gun and shot him one time."
Wright ran out of the park, secured the gate behind him, closing off the only exit to prevent his attacker's escape. Wright made his way onto Buford Dam Road where a passing motorist stopped and called 911.
When police officers arrived, the ranger was able to give a brief description of the shooter before paramedics took him a hospital.
Officers found the vehicle in a parking lot. A woman who matched the description of the shooter was inside the vehicle dead, police said.
The woman has been identified as Qiana Moore, 34, of Woodstock.
Detectives to believe that Moore committed suicide. A handgun was found inside the vehicle.
"So it seems like what we have at this point is that this female suspect shot the park ranger one time and then very likely committed suicide inside of her vehicle," Smith said.
Smith said Wright was not armed and that he was not wearing a bullet-proof vest.
Wight underwent surgery overnight, Smith said. He is still hospitalized, but is expected to survive his injuries.
