A United Parcel Service employee has been arrested for stealing prescription drugs from packages scheduled to be delivered.

Spalding County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Matthew Christian Lively, 23, of Griffin, on Thursday.

Authorities said an investigation began in April after several people complained that they were receiving empty packages when they should have been receiving medication.

The investigation revealed the medication was being removed from the packages at the UPS station in Griffin, and the empty packages were shipped on to the designated recipient.

Examples of the missing medication are morphine, oxycodone, percocet, and hydrocodone.

UPS released the following statement:

"Mr. Lively was a part time employee for UPS. He was a pre-loader (responsible for loading packages) at the Griffin facility. UPS has terminated his employment."

Lively was charged with 12 counts of misdemeanor theft by taking, 11 counts of felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, and one count of felony possession of a schedule III controlled substance.

Lively is being held in the Spalding County Jail on a bond of $81,264.
