Homeowner stops burglary thanks to camera that sends phone alerts

Posted: Updated:

A southeast Atlanta homeowner caught a would-be burglar red-handed thanks to a security system that sends alerts straight to his phone.

Blaine Hale lives in the Kirkwood section of Atlanta and said his home has been broken into multiple times before.

"After the first break-in, I went out and bought the camera - I hadn't installed it yet," Hale said. "After the second one, I immediately installed it and within four hours, caught him on camera."

Hale believed the same man is behind all three break-ins, something Atlanta police have not confirmed.

"He's been stealing power tools, yard tools and hand tools in general," Hale said.

Last week, Hale said he was away from his home when his security system, Logitech, sensed motion in front of an outside security camera, started recording, and sent a snapshot of what was happening to his phone.

"He tries to break the padlock on the door, so he runs to the side of my basement and opens the window and gets in," Hale said. "He already knew where my gloves were so he grabbed a pair and came back out here."

Hale said the man tried to break into his garage for 15 minutes, unsuccessfully, giving him enough time to head back home.

"I wasn't expecting anybody to be here still, heard him rustling and just yelled out, 'you're on camera.' He immediately ran," Hale said.

Police are still searching for the man. If you see him, call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS.
