Sanitation worker injured when oxygen tank exploded speaks out

Posted: Updated:

Two Marietta sanitation workers were injured Friday when a discarded oxygen tank exploded in their truck.

The driver Marvin Markham, 53, was hit in the face by the debris.

"It happened so quickly. I pushed the handle on the packer," said Markham. "The blade probably went up two feet then 'boom.' It sounded like a bomb went off."

Markham marked his 13-years on the job the same day of the explosion.

"I was like, 'oh my god.' It just blew debris everywhere out the back of the truck," said Markham.

He told CBS Atlanta News that at the time of the explosion, he was more concerned about his co-worker William Smith, who was hit in his eyes by all the debris.

Markham's wife Kim told CBS Atlanta News that the explosion reminded her just how lucky both of the men are since their lives were spared.

"It scared me to death. But as soon as I found out he was going to be ok, I was ok," said Kim Markham.

William Smith's family told CBS Atlanta News that his eyes were severely burned and his vision is blurry.

He's scheduled to see the eye specialist again on Monday.
