Officer struck in parking lot by alleged drunk driver

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A 44-year-old man is facing several charges after he allegedly struck an officer with his vehicle in a parking lot off Alco Street.

On Saturday around 3:30 a.m. Officer Rodney Smither questioned David Hamblen about striking a parked truck.

Hamblen denied sticking the truck.

As the officer stepped in front of Hamblen's car to direct him into a parking lot, he sped off striking the officer, according to reports. The officer said was knocked onto the hood of the car fell off onto the ground.

Hamblen was stopped at Briarcliff Road and Johnson Road. He was arrested and charged with DUI, aggravated assault and obstruction.

The officer was examined on the scene for minor soreness.
