An alleged squatter has been arrested for allegedly forging a lease that she used to orchestrate a scheme to live in a home for nearly five months.
Daquisha Barber, 33, was charged with second-degree forgery Monday afternoon and taken to DeKalb County Jail. Meanwhile, the county marshal's office evicted the family from the home, including Barber's five children who were alone at the time of the eviction.
"She's getting what she deserves," said homeowner Valister Wilson.
Wilson said Barber and her five children moved into his house at 4864 Outlook Rd. in Ellenwood in February while it was vacant and on the market.
"It's very sad, especially considering she's the mother of five kids and that anyone would put their kids through this is pretty painful to see," said Wilson.
During multiple court hearings, Barber told Judge Gary Lashaw that she had paid a broker $7,800 on a lease-purchase agreement for the home. But Wilson said his signature on the lease was forged, and the marshal's office could not locate the broker Barber claimed showed her the property.
However, Barber was able to stay in the home by filing multiple court documents including an appeal and bankruptcy.
Wilson said Barber abused the court system to get away with living rent-free for nearly five months.
"I think there has to be some kind of laws that need to be reformed," said Wilson. "I heard she [tied up one home for] 18 months, in the meantime people like myself are paying a mortgage on a house we can't sell, can't move into it, can't do anything with it because we can't legally get them out."
"She is very crafty in how she was able to keep this home tied up," said Richard Berkowitz, chief deputy of the DeKalb County Marshal's Office.
A CBS Atlanta News investigation in May uncovered court documents that showed Barber was part of similar schemes involving three other homes in DeKalb County over the past five years. Barber was evicted from a home in Lithonia a month before moving into Wilson's home.
On Monday, eviction crews removed all Barber's belongings and placed them on the front yard.
A source with the DeKalb County Police Department told CBS Atlanta News that investigators executed a search warrant and removed evidence, such as documents and computers, that could be used to file additional charges.
As of Monday night, Barber had not been released from jail.
