Water scammers target Rockdale neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
CONYERS, GA (CBS46) -

Scammers are going door-to-door, trying get homeowners to give their out vital information and trying to persuade them to buy water treatment systems, Rockdale County officials said.

Someone is putting vials and fliers in homeowners' mailboxes, asking for personal information, including names, addresses and household income.

The county says that is potentially a scam.

Homeowners in Conyers have complained they have been targets.

Sylvia Jenkins said someone recently put a vial and a flier in her mailbox.

At first she assumed it was a practical joke.

"I thought it was a prank," Jenkins said.

The flier asked Jenkins and other homeowners on Brian's Creek Drive for their personal information.

The flier also tells homeowners to leave the information and vial of tap water at their front doors and the company will pick them up and test the water.

The problem is there is no phone number, address or a company name on either the flier or the vial.

"They're just out to get from you whatever they can get from you. It kind of puts the question in your head, ‘What could this really be for?'" Jenkins asked.

Terrell Gibbs, the county's deputy director for Water Resources, said someone claiming to be a representative visits the home, puts a chemical in the vial to trick them into believing their water is tainted and tries to sell a water filtration system.

"What you don't want to do is give out your information to anyone who isn't qualified. A person can fall victim to this and they can be out hundreds even thousands of dollars for purchasing equipment they really don't need," Gibbs said.

Stanton Flemons, another homeowner, said someone left a flyer and a vial in his mailbox, but he didn't fall for it.

"I'm just happy I was able to catch it and not fall into their hands," Flemons said.

CBS Atlanta called a legitimate water filtration company.

A company spokesman said leaving a flier is a common but ineffective practice.

The spokesman said a company that is serious about attracting business will leave its name and telephone number.
