Major crime stats in Atlanta remain about the same from last year

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

How safe are you in Atlanta? Overall, the number of major crimes committed citywide remain about the same as they did last year.

But some crimes like robbery, burglary and auto theft have increased.

Beth Lowe said she's more on edge now than ever about her neighborhood.

"It's getting to the point where I don't want to go to the park by myself," Lowe said.

Lowe lives down the street from Gilliam Park in Atlanta's Kirkwood neighborhood.

That's where a woman was shot, wounded and robbed just a few days ago.

"It doesn't matter whether it's day or night," Lowe said.

Lowe worries that is part of a frightening trend.

"Crime is actually up on our area," Lowe said.

According to a new report by Atlanta police, the number of major crimes including murder, rape, robbery and burglary remain largely unchanged from last year.

But in Zone 6, which includes Kirkwood, those major crimes jumped 11 percent.

"We've seen more home break-ins, middle of the day break-ins, 9 in the morning, afternoon time all that stuff," Lowe said.

According the report, robberies in Zone 6 rose 37 percent, murder increased 50 percent and burglaries jumped 68 percent.

"This is the worst I've seen it in seven years," said homeowner Brian Adams.

Adams, who has two young children, fears the parks have grown too dangerous.

"I'm concerned that you can't take them out playing that much around here any time of the day," Adams said.

Lowe said she's taking extra precautions when she heads outside.

"[I'm] way more observant of who's around, near our cars, on our streets, who's walking up and down the streets," Lowe said.

Zone 6 commander Maj. Keith Meadows said the number of actual crimes against people are low in Kirkwood, but said police have stepped up patrols throughout the zone.
