East Point ready for fireworks redo

Posted: Updated:

It may not be the Fourth of July any more, but there will be plenty of fireworks lighting up the sky Saturday.

Thunderstorms on the Fourth forced dozens of shows across Georgia to be postponed and for most cities Saturday is the night for the redo.

A lot of planning goes into a $15,000 Fourth of July fireworks show, so postponing it wasn't an easy decision.

"It's never happened here before, but we take safety very seriously here. Safety for our guests as well as our pyrotechnicians and carnival people so we thought it was best that with the weather being so odd that we move it off to the sixth," said Brian Frey, the President of the East Point Main Street Association.

The move could end up being a good thing.

If the weather cooperates, it might not just be the East Point residents coming out, there could also be some Atlanta residents showing up to catch a second show they normally don't get to see.

"More the merrier. We welcome people to our city. We want people to see how great East Point is so the more than merrier. Come on down," said Frey.

If you do, the pyrotech crew, who are working extra hard to get it set up and keep everything dry, said it will be worth it.

"This one is 24 minutes long. That is a significantly larger show, plus the size of the shells are larger," said Lynn Broad, the master pyrotechnician.

The size of the shell and length of the show is one thing, but perhaps the best part about the East Point show is how close you can get to see it.

"When you have to look up to see bursts it just feels differently than some of the long distance ones do," said Broad.

"It's just a nice place to watch the fireworks because you feel like you're right there in the middle of all of it," added Frey.

Fireworks are set to go off around 9:30 p.m. at the East Point City Hall.
