Decatur police to host meetings after recent crimes

Posted: Updated:

A recent rash of crimes where citizens were being targeted and stolen from has Decatur's police chief reaching out to the community.

The police department will host two neighborhood meetings this week to help get residents more involved with their personal safety.

On Saturday, a woman working at a business near East Decatur Station became one of the latest crime victims in the city of Decatur.

Two young men in their mid-to-late teens were persistent about entering the business to use the restroom.

They ended up taking off with a laptop and the woman's purse.

On Friday, there was a carjacking on Sycamore Drive.

Two woman and one man, all in their late teens to early 20s, took off with a man's BMW.

Neither of the two crime victims was injured and police want to keep it that way.

Resident Michelle Riten told CBS Atlanta News that just about everyone she talks to knows about the recent uptick in crime in the area.

"There have been numerous house break-ins, two car jackings in the past week, folks having their phones forcefully taken," said Riten.

Riten likes the idea of Decatur police reaching out and holding community meetings.

She gets her information about police activity by going to the police department's website.

She knows they have their work cut out for them.

"I'm sure it's very frustrating for them too. Because things continue to happen. It seems like nearly every day for a month," said Riten.

Business owner Ryan Weaver has also heard about the recent crimes but isn't about to let it slow him down.

"The neighborhood is a great place. We run business as usual. We're just a little more heads up, and pay attention to things that are going on that seem a little bit out of the ordinary," said Weaver.

The first of two neighborhood meetings is Monday at the Solarium on West Hill Street at 7 p.m.

The second meeting is on Tuesday at the Decatur Recreational Center on Sycamore Street at 7 p.m.
