VSU's Cochran focuses on leadership in offseason

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

It would be hard to find something for Valdosta State QB Cayden Cochran to improve on this offseason.

But after a season in which Cochran earned First-Team All-Gulf South Conference honors and a national championship, the senior says he's found something to work on: his leadership skills.

Cochran says it was imperative for him to become the kind of vocal leader the Blazers lost after the 2012 season.

In fact, the senior QB says he went to many of those former teammates for tips.

"I've talked to some of the guys from last year, and they've given me pointers and things to do," Cochran says.

The biggest thing he's focused on is being vocal and pushing his teammates.

"I've tried to just be a better vocal leader," he says. "I've tried in the past to be more of a lead by example kind of thing, but now I need to kind of open my mouth and push others as much as I push myself. I think that's part of being a leader."

Head Coach David Dean says he's seen the changes Cochran has made, and he believes it will impact his team in a positive manner.

"It's good to see him step up and become that vocal leader now because people listen to him," Dean says. "They know the success that he's had, they know the hard work that he puts in everyday. When he can do that and lead by example and lead by his vocal words, that's going to help us in the long run."

Cochran threw for over 2700 yards and 26 TDs, ran for 11 more, and completed nearly 65 percent of his passes in 2012.
