Decatur residents pack crime meeting

DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

A recent rash of crimes in Decatur has many neighbors concerned and wanting to hear what police plan to do about it.

Decatur police Chief Mike Booker attended the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association meeting Monday night along with several of his officers to answer questions residents might have about the rash of crimes.

The chief also invited officer officers from neighboring DeKalb County and Atlanta's Zone 6.

"When a crime happens here, the crooks don't care about city lines," said Booker. "Hopefully tonight we'll give you a little bit of relief and a little bit comfort to know that we're out there."

Decatur's top cop told the pack house that the department has stepped up its game plan when it comes to attacking a recent rash of crimes by adding extra patrols.

The city has reported 16 burglaries in the last two months and five robberies just last week.

Detectives believe at least two of the five robberies are connected.

Resident Wes Cardell likes the idea of neighboring police departments working together to stop the bad guys.

"You have a lot kids and families here in this area. Nobody wants to be affected in a way that would be tragic," said Cardell.

Detectives say in most of the recent crimes the victims were suspicious of the crooks but didn't act on those suspicions.

It's a message resident Stella Nelms heard loud and clear.

"I think one of the biggest things one of the officers said was, 'A lot of people felt like they didn't have a good feeling about something, but they didn't trust that intuition.' So now I'm going trust my intuition," said Nelms.

There is another neighborhood meeting Tuesday at the Decatur Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
