Eight months after coming online as a new city, Brookhaven is about to have its own dedicated police force.
Mayor J. Max Davis, police Chief Gary Yandura and other city officials made the announcement Tuesday morning, unveiling the new police patrol car, a 2013 Ford model. The city will have 57 vehicles for 54 officers.
"It's kind of emotional for me," said Davis. "Seeing a police car with our city's name on it, to be patrolling in just a few weeks, is something I've been working on for the past three or four years. Now that dream is becoming a reality."
The new police force will take over coverage from DeKalb County police on July 31, following a two-week training period for new officers.
The city received 1,200 applications for the 54 uniformed officer positions.
