Business owners looking for answers after rash of ATM thefts

Posted: Updated:

Paul Giaccia has been in the ATM business for almost a decade. He and other business owners are worried about the recent rash of smash and grab ATM thefts throughout the metro area.

"We had a really bad string in 2007, 2010 now 2013 so it seems it comes in waves," said Giaccia. "We took a really big hit in 2010, our insurance company dropped us. We have to come out of pocket now for every theft."

Giaccia said business owners can take steps to keep their stores from becoming a target.

"I know with the recent wave it's a little bit scary, but hopefully police catch the guys quickly," said Giaccia.

First, don't place the ATM in the front of your business by a window.

"If it is something you can easily put a chain around just a couple feet of the window, then it is more tempting for someone to come and take," Giaccia said.

It's also a good idea to make sure your machine is properly bolted to the floor.

"That's the biggest problem we notice, when people don't bolt the ATM down," said Giaccia. "People scout out ATMs to see if it's bolted."

Giaccia said ATM manufacturers are now making the machines sturdier and harder to crack.

"It's not that easy to get in them and first of all, there is a lot times when there is not that much money in the machines," said Giaccia. "The ATM is worth more than the money inside of it and the criminals ruin the ATM trying to access the money."

And if thieves are successful at taking the ATM it won't take long for police to find them because most of them are now equipped with GPS tracking devices.

Giaccia said until police catch this crew of ATM thieves business owners need to take extra precautions.

"If it happened three nights in a row, it's probably going to happen again tonight," Giaccia said.
