Broken water main causes sinkhole in Cherokee County

Posted: Updated:

A huge sinkhole in Cherokee County forced the shutdown of a major intersection in Woodstock Thursday morning.

A 6" water main burst at the intersection of East Cherokee and South Holly Springs Road, and caused the sinkhole.

Work is already underway to close the sinkhole. Crews are using a backhoe to lift all the debris out of the hole.

Eventually a new pipe will be put in.

The good news is that people CBS Atlanta News talked to didn't lose water, but they hope it can be cleaned up before the end of the day.

"This is one of the main thoroughfares through, and this is going to be a huge issue until they get this fixed," said one resident.

A crew with county's water department repaired the water main break in no time. The county contracted Chumley Paving to repair the street.

"If we get rain, it could put us towards dark, midnight. If we have a big flood it could fill it up with water then we would not be able to fix it today," said owner Robby Chumley.

The rain held off. By 6 p.m. the hole was filled, and Chumley and his crew were putting on the finishing touch.
