CBS Atlanta gets action for car buyer following auction mix-up

A Villa Rica woman who bought a 2000 Volkswagen in March from an Auto Auction in Marietta received a refund for that vehicle following a CBS Atlanta report Thursday afternoon.

Ashaneyia Tilghman said she never received a title for the car, even though she paid for it in full.

After several weeks of mechanical trouble with the vehicle, Tilghman said she tried to return it to the Dealer's Choice Auto Auction on Cobb Parkway. However, she said she was told it could not be returned without a title.

"I don't see how this even happened, I don't see how this situation came about," said Tilghman, who has had to use her parents' vehicles to get to and from work and school.

"I'm really just trying to get my life back on track, but I'm short three grand," she said.

However, when told about the issue Thursday afternoon by CBS Atlanta, Dealer's Choice Auto Auction issued Tilghman a full refund for the purchase price of the car.

Office manager Judy Fields said Tilghman never received the title because of a paperwork mix-up with the state of Georgia. The title for the vehicle was accidentally sent back to the car's original seller, according to Fields.

"It's just a human error," said Fields, who explained they act only as the middle man in the sale process. "The seller did what they were supposed to do. We did what we were supposed to do. We met all of our obligations, we turned it over to the DMV. They're human, they sent it to the wrong party."

She said they were still waiting to receive a duplicate title, but would take the car back and give a refund to Tilghman.
