SMYRNA, GA (CBS46) -

After spending nearly 15 hours searching a Smyrna apartment complex for a man who shot a Cobb County Police officer, authorities said they exhausted their search and are looking for leads elsewhere.

Officer D. Rogers was shot at the Concord Chase Apartment complex on Hurt Road at about 1:15 a.m.

According to Cobb County Police Department spokesman Ofc. Mike Bowman, Rogers noticed a man who appeared to be loitering in the complex. Rogers got out of his patrol car, and approached the man in an attempt to question him.

"The suspect just arbitrarily ran from the officer," Bowman said. "The officer gave chase, and was blind-sided and shot."

Rogers returned home on Friday where he is recovering. He was shot in the chest area of his bulletproof vest, police said.

Initially, police thought the suspect was hiding in an apartment inside the complex. SWAT officers stormed the apartment, but the man was not inside.

Police immediately set up a perimeter around the fenced apartment complex, which is why they believed the gunman was contained within that area.

The county also initiated its automated emergency alert system that notified residents in a one-mile radius with a recorded call letting them know what happened, and asking for their help getting information that might lead them to the shooter.

Police describe the shooter as a black man in his late teens or early 20s with a dark complexion. He has short hair with twists, police said. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki shorts.

Police have stopped their search of the complex, and are pursuing other leads at this time.

Crimestoppers is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with info leading to arrest.

Rogers has been with Cobb County Police Department since 2005.
