Hundreds gather to honor Corporal Crystal Parker

EAST POINT, GA (CBS46) -

Hundreds of people gathered to lay Corporal Crystal Parker to rest on Saturday.

The East Point police officer was shot in the head inside her home. A former roommate is charged with her murder.

The service started with a long motorcade of cop cars from agencies all across metro Atlanta.

As the family drove by, dozens of officers saluted, as a tribute to a woman who was considered one of the best officers in the department.

Sgt. Bruce Halliburton with the East Point Police Department helped train Parker when she first joined the department.

"I always had high hopes for her when she first started, and she turned out to be more incredible than we ever could have imagine," said Halliburton.

Inside the church, it was an emotional service filled with talk of a different kind of salute.

"Help us to know that the other day Corporal Parker walked into heaven being saluted by the angels," said one of the pastors.

Parker leaves behind family and friends who literally lined up to talk about her, from funny stories to sad stories.

One word that continued to come up was "contagious." In Parker's case that was a good thing.

"Half the department was trained by her, and we all feel the same way about her. She wasn't just a co-worker. She was a friend," said one of the officers.

Another officer added, "Every single one of those people are contaminated with Crystal. She's not gone; she's with all of us."

There was also a lot of talk about family.

Law enforcement is always considered to most officers as a second family, but on this day there was only one.

"You may have lost her in body, but you have gained an entire family of brothers and sisters. You can call upon us anytime you need us," said one of Parker's training officers.

And to that, Parker's twin brother said thank you in his own special way. He saluted everyone in the church and said, "I salute you all. Thank you."
