Lithonia woman blames parked MARTA bus in road for accident

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

On Friday CBS Atlanta News exposed MARTA bus drivers parking in traffic and leaving their buses unattended.

Now a Lithonia woman says a parked MARTA bus caused her to get in a serious accident in DeKalb County.

"It was horrendous; it was just a horrible sound. I still hear it in my head," accident victim Clarice Conley said.

Conley told police that a MARTA bus was parked on the road and she could not see around it, and when she pulled on to Stonecrest Square she slammed into another car.

CBS Atlanta News witnessed a MARTA bus park in the same spot on the road Monday. The driver got off the bus with it running and left a woman and her baby on the bus unattended.

"Buses should not block entire lanes of traffic. It's a hazard to the people on the road who are already on the road because they can't see in front of the bus and those entering the road that can't see around the bus," Conley said.

Last week, CBS Atlanta News spotted MARTA bus drivers using their bus stops as parking spots to get out and walk around.

"Bus drivers go into Wendy's, they go into CVS," resident Tim Gravitt said.

Plus, we noticed a driver walking off the bus with it running and the door wide open.

MARTA is now investigating all of the claims and they are taking steps to ensure their vehicles are parked safely in layover areas where they don't impede traffic.

"I was confused as to why the bus was here in the first place," Conley said.

Conley was cited in the accident for failing to yield when entering the road. She also said the MARTA bus pulled off before the police arrived.
