ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta's newest tourist attraction is finally up and running.

SkyView Atlanta, a 200-foot Ferris wheel, opened in Centennial Olympic Park Tuesday.

The anticipation and buildup for the opening was so big it had people lined up before it had even opened.

John Wilson was one of the first people in line.

"I would like to see Atlanta from up there," said Wilson.

But first the giant Ferris wheel had to be officially welcomed to Atlanta by the mayor and City Council. After a ribbon cutting, the city leaders got first dibs on a ride.

"You can see all over to the Ponce de Leon court, up north to Buckhead. Then off to the west and it gives you a sense of pride in what we all have built as a community," said Mayor Kasim Reed.

The city leaders saw the great views but they also saw things a little differently. They not only see it as a great place to take in the city, but also a 20-story economic boom.

"Every new attraction gives us exponential growth in investment and the amount of dollars in our city. That means a lot for our economy and means a lot for job creation," said Councilman Kwanza Hall.

But average citizens weren't concerned about that. They just loved the ride.

"Oh it was wonderful. I've been all over Atlanta but I've never looked over Atlanta," said Wilson.

"It was exciting. Nice comfortable ride. It was not a roller coaster. Did not have roller coaster effect, which was great," said Clinton Watson.

It costs $13.50 for adults, $8.50 for kids 12 an under and children under age 2 ride free.
