Proposed road project could demolish homes

Posted: Updated:

A proposed road project could force people to move in two counties.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wants to widen McDonough Road from two to four lanes, stretching from Tara Boulevard in Clayton County to Highway 54 in Fayette County. The nearly six mile long expansion would also include a median and bike lanes.

"We're talking about knocking off several thousand vehicles from going through that road a day, if we don't get this road widened, "explained Mark McKinnon with GDOT. He said the area is already congested, and getting worse.

However, the project will likely gobble up at least 22 homes, including Jaquelyn Turner's in Clayton County. "They're going to get my house; there's no doubt about it," said Turner sadly.

For those not losing their houses, the project will cut deep into their yards. "I hate it; I hate it," complained James Guice. Guice said the road will take over nearly all of his front yard. "Who's going to buy my house then?" he asked.

"We have to look at the greater good for the whole community, and try and keep traffic moving, and we certainly go in there and negotiate with them, and offer them a fair market value for their homes," explained McKinnon.

Turner said she was only being offered $24,000 for her home and two acres.

McKinnon said all public comments will be weighed before the project begins. Public comments will be taken until July 25. The project is expected to begin in four years.
