COLLIERVILLE, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A small plane crashed into a pond on private property in Collierville Wednesday. Two people were in the plane and were able to walk away before it caught fire.

Marvin Shackleford owns the plane he describes as a home built ultra light Merlin. He says he bought it several years ago. Shackleford said his two-out-of-town friends were in the plane.

"It hit a little tree and spun around in a pond and then caught fire, and there's not anything left but a wing tip and tail," said Shackleford.

Shackleford says his friends were not seriously hurt. One of the men in the airplane was taken here to Baptist East to be treated for minor injuries.

"The fact that the two men walked away from the crash under their own power is absolutely amazing," said Collierville Police Department Lt. Phillip Arnold.

Police said the plane was traveling south from the Colonial Air Park Airport when the two people on-board noticed the engine sputtering. They tried to make a landing in a field. As soon as they landed, the two were able to unbuckle their seat belts and get to safety before a small explosion occurred in the engine.

Mary Lou Mills witnessed the crash near the intersection of East Shelby Drive and Reynolds Road.

"I saw the plane crash near a lake. We turned around, and we saw it on fire, and then we called 911 ... Now they are all here, and the people in the plane are OK," she said. "It was just really low to the ground then it kind of started to tilt ... Looked like he was aiming for the pond."

Federal investigators will take a look at the plane to try and figure out more about what happened.
