Brookhaven Police prepare for July 31 takeover

Posted: Updated:

Officers with the Brookhaven Police Department have less than two weeks to train for their first day, taking over for DeKalb County Police on July 31. DeKalb County authorities have patrolled the new city of Brookhaven, since it came online in December of 2012.

Officers went through perhaps the most important part of their training Wednesday, when they practiced shooting their new fire arm, the Glock 21. Even though all of the 54 officers on the force have at least three years of prior law enforcement experience, Brookhaven officials say many of the officers have never used the weapon.

"Anytime you transition to a firearm that you're absolutely unfamiliar with, it's like getting that new car, you're going to warm up your feel with it," said Sgt. Chad Latonis.

"The firearms training is probably the most critical part of training for the next two and a half weeks," said Lt. Brandon Gurley.

More than 1,200 people applied for the 54 officer positions, with which Brookhaven will open their police department.
