CBS46 News has hired a seasoned sports director to head up the station's exciting line-up of sports programs and events.
Larry Smith joins the station from WCPO in Cincinnati, Ohio where he served as an anchor and special projects reporter. Smith will be the face of sports coverage on CBS46, hosting special programs such as the CBS46 SEC Wrap Up Show, Falcons Face to Face, and Falcons Game Day Live. He will also use his years of expertise to bring viewers sports-related content in evening newscasts.
"CBS46 is excited to have someone of Larry's caliber and experience joining our team," said News Director Lane Michaelsen. "I am lucky to have worked with Larry before and witnessed first-hand his passion for sports and his dedication to the community."
Smith has racked up 25 years in the broadcast business, where he's served as an anchor, sports anchor, host, and sports reporter. He's anchored or hosted more than 3,000 shows and delivered more than 5,000 live shots. From a dozen Final Fours, six Super Bowls, four Olympics and everything in between, Smith has been front and center for many major sporting events around the world. He informed viewers about Major League Baseball's work stoppage in 1995, Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash in 2001, and Michael Vick's sentencing for animal cruelty in 2006.
"I'm excited to be a part of the CBS46 team and to lead the new sports department here," said Smith. "Atlanta is one of the top sports cities in the world, with a rare blend of top-level professional, collegiate, and prep teams and programs. I can't wait to communicate our area's best stories to our audience."
Smith has been recognized all over the country for his expertise in news and sports coverage. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Eastern Illinois University and in 2002 he received a Peabody Award for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina.
Smith is an avid golfer, but his number one activity is spending time with his wife and children.
