DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The parents of 2-year-old Evan Harrison thanked the community for their love and support, after their son was shot last month outside a Kroger in Stone Mountain.

For the first time, Jermaine Harrison spoke to reporters at a news conference on Thursday with his son and wife by his side. Harrison is the good Samaritan who tackled an alleged robber outside the Kroger on Hairston Road. Police said the suspect, Chazerel Burton, then started shooting into Harrison's car with his wife and son inside.

More than a dozen shots were fired and Evan was struck by a bullet. He is now out of the hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.

"It's amazing how far he's come," said Harrison.  "I had faith that he would pull through, and that I wouldn't lose him in front of my eyes," said Harrison. "Faith and I just hoped for the best."

Harrison said his grandmother raised him to help others, and that's what spurred him into action outside Kroger. He said he has no ill will toward Burton, who is now in jail.

"I'm just glad he's off the streets, because I feel that someone that would do something like that would pretty much do anything," said Harrison.

DeKalb County's police chief credited Harrison for his actions, and said the case touched the entire department.

"I was out there on the scene that day and when you see something like this occur, it really, really sends a shock wave up your spine," said Chief Cedric Alexander. "But also know too that those who are responsible for this are going to have to answer."

The suspect, Chazerel Burton, is in the DeKalb County jail. He is due in court in late July.

"We got so many text messages from unknown numbers, and e-mails and all that from the community, that really helped us through this," said Harrison.
