Rescues are up on Tybee due to rip currents

Posted: Updated:

Rip currents are causing more rescues on Tybee this year.

Tybee Ocean Rescue Captain Mike Taylor says there have been 2 "near drownings," 76 water assist, and 182 this year.

Captain Taylor said a water assist is when a person can grab the floatation device to help bring themselves in. A water rescue is when a person is in distress and in danger of drowning and will possibly need medical upon arriving on shore.

"Most of the rescues on our beaches are related to rip currents that's why it is important to take away the guess work when spotting a dangerous current from the shore," said Captain Taylor.
