Family of mother, daughter killed in hit-and-run thank witnesses

LILBURN, GA (CBS46) -

Two men prayed in front of a growing memorial that marked the spot where Maria Cervantes, 36, and Melissa Cervantes, 6, were hit and killed by a driver that left the scene.

The men said they were family of that mother and daughter and that they were told not to speak publicly about what happened by their attorney. But they did say they wanted to thank the multiple people who saw the Thursday evening accident happen and were able to help catch the suspected driver.

Arianna Knight was one of those witnesses. The 16-year-old had only been driving for nine months when she was turning her car around in a church parking lot when the accident happened right in front of her.

"I see a car and it swerves off of the road and not only onto the sidewalk, but on the other side of the sidewalk into the lawn," Knight said. "He smashes into these two girls walking, minding their own business and he splits right through them. As he keeps going, I stop and the dust clears, I notice them laying on the floor, completely motionless."

At least three other witnesses stopped, and Knight said they quickly teamed up to help.

"They jet after this man. He's in a big Ford pickup truck - didn't even care to stop at all," Knight said.

Lilburn police said two cars of witnesses followed the man, got him to stop and led police to his pickup truck less than half a mile away.

"It definitely goes to show that there are still good people around here," Knight. "Whether you're 16, or you're 40, 50, there's always good people around here."

Lilburn police arrested Spencer Prigmore, 43, and charged him with reckless driving, DUI, two counts of vehicular homicide and failure to report an accident.
