CBS Atlanta gets action for residents flooded by clogged drain

Posted: Updated:

When it rains, it pours for some homeowners near Mabelton.

Bijoy Jose dug up the debris in this drainage ditch next to his home on Lee Road in Cobb County.

"This is a tree log that washed up from the upstream and it's blocking this whole drain," Jose said.

It's a job he says can't wait on the county to help him with it because every time it rains hard, his front yard turns into a raging river and he's not the only homeowner with this problem.

"Water was up to the bottom of my shorts when I was walking around out here helping my sister get her car out," resident Wendy Abernathy said.

Abernathy said rain water flooded her sister's home over the weekend, destroying her hot water heater.

The water also drenched the carpet inside Abernathy's home.

So CBS Atlanta News contacted Cobb County and they sent out the Department of Transportation to assess the situation. Minutes later, a DOT worker cleaned the clogged drain.

"Dig up the road and put a bigger pipe there or something. That's what needs to be done so it will stop flooding," Abernathy said.

Cobb County DOT said they will be sending out a team of engineers to determine if a larger drain needs to be installed on Lee Road.
