ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A convenience store clerk was hospitalized after being shot in the backside late Monday night.

It happened at about 11:25 p.m. at an Exxon gas station at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Moreland Avenue in northeast Atlanta.

"At this point, we're not absolutely certain on the motive, although it appears that the motive may have been a robbery attempt," said Maj. Tim Peek of the Atlanta Police Department.

The clerk, whom police identified as Jack Alieu, 46, was taken to Grady where he underwent surgery, police said. Alieu's co-workers told CBS Atlanta News Tuesday morning that he is expected to survive.

"There were at least two suspects, possibility of three," Peek said. Surveillance video shows two men entering the store. One approaches the counter and pulls a handgun out of his waistband. The clerk retreats and turns to run toward a back office. That's when the shooter fires a shot and takes off running through the front door, which is being held open by the accomplice who also flees on foot.
