Caller impersonating deputy targets families

FORSYTH COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Several residents in Forsyth County have reported to investigators that a man is claiming to be a sheriff's deputy. He called to request money from them.

The caller told his victims that he is a lieutenant with the Forsyth County sheriff's office, according to press release issued by the department. The male identified himself as Lt. Jonathan Baxley, badge number 8836, with the Warrant Unit.

The deputy impersonator would tell his potential victim on the phone that he has a warrant for a family member for failure to appear in court on a speeding ticket on Georgia 400. He would then give the name of a family member.

Investigators said the caller ended the conversation by telling his potential victim that an arrest would be made if the matter was not cleared up in 30 minutes.

The male also added that this can be taken care of by paying $362 on the phone through a debit or credit card.

The incidents are under investigation by the Forsyth County sheriff's office. The agency has asked if anyone has been contacted by the impersonator to call the Forsyth County sheriff's office.
