KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer George Brett announced Thursday that he is stepping down as the team's interim hitting coach.

Brett stepped in May 30 as the Royals season appeared to be spiraling out of control.

Pedro Grifol will take over the hitting coach duties. Brett will return to his previous position as vice president of baseball operations.

Brett and Royals general manager Dayton Moore will discuss the moves at 4 p.m.

In a statement, Moore praised Brett's efforts.

"His expertise as a baseball man and his passion to win will have an everlasting effect on our team. I'm thrilled that he will be more involved in all aspects of baseball operations," Moore said.

Brett reiterated Thursday that he only took the position on an interim basis.

"There is a ton of talent here and doing this for almost two months has prepared me to be a better advisor to Dayton and his staff," Brett said. "This has been an unbelievable experience for me and now I'm energized to contribute more to this organization as a I return to my non-uniformed role."
