Vandals target Veterans Park

LULA, GA (CBS46) -

Vandals spray-painted the Veterans Park in Lula, which is in Hall County. City workers said they discovered the damage around 8 a.m. Thursday.

On Sunday morning, the Gainesville Home Depot cleaned-up the damage for free.

Norm Harrop, city councilman and veteran, said they think the vandalism occurred between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The outside brick walls were marked with black spray-painted lines. There also appears to be lettering on one wall, but it doesn't spell anything.

The inside of the memorial that includes bricks with the names of veterans was not touched.

Harrop and eight family members each have a brick with their names. He said the vandalism is more than hurtful.

"I feel they're disgracing all the guys on this wall. They have done lot for this country and they don't need that," said Harrop.

City workers tried different ways to remove the pain and were unsuccessful. He said the porous brick absorbed the paint. He and the city estimate it will cost thousands of dollars to remove.

Members of the city think kids are responsible for the damage. Harrop wants them caught and to pay for the expense of fixing the damage.

"I probably feel for all veterans, it's a disgrace and we need to do better than that and we need to teach our kids better than that," said Harrop.

The Lula Historical Society is offering a $500 reward to help lead to the people responsible.
