Lilburn hit-and-run victims remembered in vigil

Posted: Updated:

There was a big turnout Thursday night in Lilburn for a vigil honoring a mother and daughter killed in a hit-and-run crash.

Friends, family and neighbors met at the crash site to light candles and pray for 6-year-old Melissa Cervantes and her mother, Maria. There was also music during the vigil with many of the attendees singing in Spanish.

The mother and daughter were walking on the sidewalk last week, when they were hit. One of the victims' relatives who attended Thursday night's vigil said it's been tough on the family.

"Her mom in Mexico is coping with it right now, because it's not present for her yet. We're trying to get her to her in Mexico," said Rebecca Compean'Cervantes.

At the end of the vigil, everyone released white balloons into the air for Maria and Melissa.
