There are about five to eight dogs in the pack. Kristan Huntley, Executive Director of the Cooper-Young Community Association, says a couple of weeks ago several cats were discovered mauled.
(WMC-TV) - Several dogs have been spotted killing family cats in the Cooper-Young area.
The killers are on the loose in Midtown, and now the Cooper-Young Community Association sends a warning to residents about the pack of dogs roaming the area. They say the dogs acted aggressively with at least one resident who was walking her dog.
"You don't want the dogs running loose and killing all the cats and coming after you while you're walking your dog," said resident Laura Hart.
Hart has seen the pack of stray dogs the neighborhood association is warning residents about.
There are about five to eight dogs in the pack. Kristan Huntley, Executive Director of the Cooper-Young Community Association, says a couple of weeks ago several cats were discovered mauled. The people who have found the cats say they were mauled by the dogs but not eaten.
"Over the past four or so days we've had reports of several other cats turned up dead. In the past couple of days we had residents spot this happening," she said.
Hart says the dogs are thin.
"Many of them are probably related. Maybe they are from a litter ... Maybe there is a mother involved," said veterinarian Dr. Thomas Slattery.
Slattery says he is not surprised to hear how large the pack is, but he is surprised they are in such a populated area like Cooper-Young. Also, he says the dogs are likely just being predators. Cooper-Young is an area with a lot of cats outside and plenty of people who go for walks.
"I think people should be afraid of them. I don't know they'll stay away from people," said Slattery.
Slattery does not recommend people approach the pack of dogs. The association says call the Memphis Animal Shelter or police. The Association has contacted police and the animal shelter about the problem.
