BUFORD, GA (CBS46) -
Some avid couponers have used their talents to turn a $2,000 donation to a Gwinnett County charity into one worth five times that much.
Members of 12 Stone Church recently donated $2,000 to the North Gwinnett Co-Op, an organization that distributes groceries and toiletries to qualified applicants who are in need. That's when the charity's executive director Maureen Kornowa turned to Katherine and Brad Cary of Suwanee, avid couponers who often give couponing seminars to other volunteers, to help stretch every dollar of the donation.
"She kind of called our bluff, and she's like, ‘OK, here. Here's the $2,000. Let's see what you can do with it,'" said Katherine Cary. "So we used our couponing skills and stretched it to $10,000."
By watching grocery store sale adds and clipping coupons, the Carys were able to use the church's donation to buy 5,500 grocery items over the course of three months. The couple's two teenage sons have been amazed.
"We would come home from our shopping trips and say, ‘Boys, could you come help us unload?'" recalled Katherine Cary. "They would tote bags and bags down to the basement and box them up. We had all these boxes. We had over 250 boxes full of food we were delivering today."
On Friday, volunteers helped the Carys deliver the boxes to the charity, located in Buford. Kornowa told CBS Atlanta News that the donation couldn't have come at a better time.
"This was probably the barest I've ever seen our shelves go," said Kornowa. "So to have this food delivered today was just a huge blessing."
The Carys have developed a website called DustyWallet.com to help people sharpen their couponing skills. Click here for the link.
