Ga. selects new provider for employee health plan

Posted: Updated:

Georgia is moving toward a single provider for its state employee health care plan.

Officials with the Department of Community Health announced Friday that it has awarded the contract to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia.

Previously, the state offered the choice of two providers -- Cigna and UnitedHealthcare. Both have been fighting the state in court over the current bid process.

The changes take effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Health Commissioner Clyde Reese says the plan options will provide members with the possibility of financial relief. The move is expected to save the state an estimated $200 million next year.

Currently, an estimated 672,000 members and dependents are enrolled in the state health plan.
