PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The search for a special-needs teenager ended just after 9:00 Sunday evening. The teen, who was missing since Friday, was found safe in a youth shelter Sunday night but instead of going home to her mother, she is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Phoenix police joined several other agencies Sunday, searching an area in the 800 block of East Bell Road for a missing endangered teen.

Deanna Lynn Blanco, 16, was last seen Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the area of 700 E. Bell Rd. in Phoenix.

Her disappearance was concerning to authorities because Blanco suffers Asperger and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and also has difficulty with her vision and hearing.

According to Phoenix Police, Blanco was found early Saturday morning by a driver. She was reportedly crying on the side of the road. Police say that driver took her to a local youth shelter which housed her overnight.

On Sunday, the youth shelter contacted Child Protective Services, police said.

Later in the evening, Child Protective Services stopped by the girl's home in North Phoenix. Police say that's when all agencies involved in the search became aware that Deanna was alive and well.

Phoenix Police say Deanna is in Child Protective Service custody and has not been returned home to her mother. It is unclear why Deanna is not being returned to her mother.
