SANDY SPRINGS, GA (CBS46) -

Monday is the first day of school for students in DeKalb, Fulton and Clayton counties, along with kids in several other metro Atlanta school districts.

Students also return to class Monday in Fayette, Hall, Spalding and Walton counties. It's the first day of school as well for Gainesville City Schools, Georgia Connections Academy, Georgia Cyber Academy (Virtual), Provost Academy of Georgia and Scholars Academy Charter School.

Five-year-old Robert Foster is thrilled to be starting his first day of kindergarten at High Point Elementary School in Sandy Springs.

"Kindergarten is fun, and you want to go there to practice all of your reading and learning," said Robert.

"It's a little bitter-sweet, but we're very excited," said his mom Jaime. "He's ready. He's very excited, and it's a family event this morning as we all come here and send him off to kindergarten."

Alyssa Marotte is thrilled to be starting sixth grade at Ridgeview Middle School.

"I get to have a locker, and we're switching classes every period, so it's just kind of exciting," Alyssa said.

Her mom Kristen said both of her kids were awake at 5:15 a.m.

"Beds made, dog walked. It was wonderful. I could keep this up for a while," said Marotte, adding that she doubts the excitement will last. "I'll be pulling them out of the sheets tomorrow but I enjoyed this morning."

Drivers are reminded to pay attention to school zone speed limit signs and to leave plenty of extra time for the morning commute.
