Cherokee Sheriff's Office warning residents about phone scam

Posted: Updated:
CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a phone scam.

Two different residents reported that they received a phone call from a man saying he was a Cherokee County deputy who was collecting payment by phone for outstanding traffic citations from 2011.

The suspect told the victims that a judge had authorized payment by phone to assist with the backlog of citations and were even allowing them to pay a discounted price if paid immediately.

Legitimate payments for citations are made at the Cherokee County Justice Center, not by phone.

If you receive a phone call from a person claiming to be a deputy collecting money, you should report the incident.
