(RNN) – As many wait for a high-profile gay male athlete in a major professional sport to come out, one man who is a member of World Wrestling Entertainment came out to a photographer in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Fred Rosser, whose performs under the name Darren Young, was asked by a photographer from an entertainment website whether a gay man in mixed-martial arts or pro-wrestling could be successful.

Rosser, who had just arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport for Sunday's WWE pay-per-view Summerslam event, had an answer that shocked and amazed the photographer.

"Absolutely - look at me. I'm a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay and I'm happy, I am very happy," Rosser said.

Rosser went on to say that his sexual orientation doesn't matter in the large scheme of things, but that he has been very successful as a member of the WWE, and that entertaining the WWE's fans is what was most important to him. He is one half of the WWE tag team The Prime Time Players.

The WWE immediately made a strong show of support Thursday.

"WWE Superstar Darren Young (Fred Rosser) revealed to the WWE Universe that he is gay," the statement said. "WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Earlier today, in fact, Darren participated in one of our Be A STAR anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation."

Many WWE Superstars immediately went to Twitter to show their support for their fellow WWE superstar.

"I'm VERY PROUD of @DarrenYoungWWE," his tag team partner Titus O'Neil tweeted. "He's been like Family 2Me&My kids And that won't Change! #ImINFullSupportOfDarren."

"Congratulations, @DarrenYoungWWE for living YOUR life, YOUR way. #proud," WWE great Triple H retweeted.

Fans of the WWE have also made their way to social media to show their love and support to Rosser.
