The controversial state lawmaker behind the so-called "don't say gay" bill is now trying to protect Christmas.

State Rep. Stacey Campfield (R-Knoxville) has filed a bill he said would assure students and teachers could wish others "Merry Christmas."

Campfield said the proposal would stop what he called silly lawsuits.

Campfield told the Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper he wasn't aware of a specific case in Tennessee.

Campfield's bills often draw a lot of attention and criticism.

One of Campfield's bills, ridiculed as the "Don't Say Gay" bill, would have forced schools to tell parents if their kids talked about being gay. It failed in a House subcommittee earlier this year.
