Residents in South Fulton are mourning the loss of a standout high school football player who collapsed on the field and later died.
It happened Friday night during a scrimmage between Creekside High School and Banneker High School.
The official autopsy showed 16-year-old DeAntre Turman, a junior at Creekside High, died from a broken neck. His third cervical vertebra was fractured, according the Fulton County medical examiner's office.
DeAntre's uncle, Kenneth Turman, told CBS Atlanta that it was just a regular hit.
"He tackled the guy. It was just a hard hit - regular hit that he's made 1,000 times," Kenneth Turman said.
But after the tackle he didn't get up. DeAntre was having breathing problems and was taken by ambulance to the ER.
DeAntre's uncle said the family rushed to the hospital, only to be told DeAntre didn't make it.
It was an absolute shock to the family considering his fitness level. They said he always passed his physicals, and he was only getting bigger and better.
In fact, he was doing so well his uncle said that he was already being scouted and had his sights set on the University of Kentucky.
"The special ones, you can tell it, but you don't have to tell them they're good. He was one of those, he knew he was good," said Kenneth Turman.
That makes this an even bigger loss for Creekside High School.
Even though one of their star players won't be on the field this year, the Turman family said they still plan on being in the stands.
"I'm going to continue to support Creekside. That team needs to be supported, and I think that's what Tre would have wanted," said Kenneth Turman.
