STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

DeKalb County fire officials are working to determine what caused an early morning fire at the Wynview apartments in Stone Mountain.

Fire officials told CBS Atlanta News on Tuesday morning 40 to 50 people had to be evacuated.

When fire crews first arrived on scene, flames were shooting through the roof of the complex.

"It was well involved. When we pulled up, there were active evacuations going on," said DeKalb County assistant Chief Steve Ham. "We had heavy fire in the second floor we were able to set up our aerial truck and get a quick knock down on it."

According to fire officials the fire started just before 3:30 a.m.

The Red Cross is currently in process of providing emergency assistance to 26 adults and 22 children.
