A bizarre rash of crime in Henry County is not only costing tax payers money, it's also affecting kids trying to get to and from school.

Thirty-eight batteries have been stolen from 21 different school buses dating back to Aug. 4 and police think the same suspects are behind all the heists.

The batteries have been stolen from buses at six different schools primarily in the central and northern parts of the county.

One burglary took place while a bus was parked at its driver's residence.

On a bus, the battery isn't under the hood. It's on the side to give the driver easy access in case of an emergency, but it also gives easy access to criminals.

"We have locks on the doors, and also put locks and other features that would secure the batteries, but the thieves are gaining access to them regardless," said district spokesman J.D. Hardin.

Getting away the batteries isn't easy either, because they are certainly not average batteries. Some of them weigh more than 120 pounds.

Hardin said its cost them more than $5,000 to replace the stolen batteries, but Hardin said that's not even the worse part.

"It's the mere fact that they're essentially stealing from kids. It's their way to and from school and of course the cost to tax payers. Its heart breaking to see," said Hardin

And the timing of it all couldn't be worse.

"You're trying to get back to running smoothly with the first of the year and you're dealing with transportation routes that need to be smoothed over, but now you're just throwing an extra kink into the flow of the day," said Hardin.

The district does have surveillance video of two of the suspects that appear to be between 5'7" and 6'0'' tall, in their mid-to-late 30s.

If you have information, contact Sgt. Sandra Holliday with the Henry County Sheriff's Office at 678-898-7339.
