DeKalb County schools to review social media alert system in light of shooting

Posted: Updated:

One day after a near school tragedy in DeKalb County, McNair Discovery Learning Academy Principal Dr. Brian Bolden praised the school community for coming together during a difficult time.

"We had parents that were helping in the cafeteria, we had parents that were helping in the classrooms, we had parents that were helping the principal," Bolden said.

One concern for parents, school leaders never notified them via social media or text message as Tuesday's frightening events unfolded.

"We are going to look at every aspect of what occurred and any way that we can improve the process we're going to do it," Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond said.

Thurmond said they didn't notify parents immediately after the gunman entered the school because they were still gathering information.

"You always have to understand who you're serving and the population of which you serve. Some populations have greater access to the social media than others," Thurmond said.

School officials said they decided to inform parents through the news media instead and in their opinion it worked because every child was returned to their parents safely. Students will return to McNair Discovery Learning Academy Thursday.

"We are welcoming you back to our building and it is going to be business as usual as we soar to become the great leaders that we were born to be," Bolden said.
