Police: Hit-and-run driver leaves two women seriously injured

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Two women are recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital following a hit-and-run collision in the West End district Friday night. Atlanta Police said the women were sitting on a brick wall, near a park at the corner of Peeples and White Streets, when they were hit.

Police think the driver was in a stolen vehicle from an Avis car rental lot. After hitting the two victims at the brick wall, the vehicle crashed through a fence into an Atlanta Public Schools utility vehicle parking lot. One of the victims, Adrienne Smith, was pinned beneath the Ford Edge. Police said she has a partially-severed leg. The other victim, 21-year-old Brianna Johnson, suffered a broken pelvis.

According to her grandfather, Johnson also has internal bleeding and is in a medically induced coma.

"The two girls were best friends, and they were just sitting here on a wall, apparently having a conversation," said Bob Johnson. "They've known each other since they were little children."

"We just wish that whoever did this would turn themselves in and do the right thing."

Police said they don't have a clear description on the suspect, only knowing that he got away on foot.
