Mayor Kasim Reed announces candidacy for re-election

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed kicked off of his re-election campaign on Monday.

In front of friends, family, and supporters, Reed made official his plans to once again lead Atlanta from its highest office.

"I don't want any other job or to be doing any other thing," said Reed.

By most accounts, Reed has enjoyed a very successful first term as Atlanta's 59th mayor.

Overall crime in the city is down and Atlanta's budget is balanced.

To date, one of Reed's top accomplishments is the securing a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.

"Atlanta is on an unstoppable trajectory towards being one of the leading cities in the world. That is where the city of Atlanta is going," said Reed.

Reed has also had his critics. In particular, many street vendors are very unhappy with his administration thanks to new policies.

"We just want our mayor to let us go back to work and run our business' like men," said street vendor Stan Hambrick.

"Our families are hungry, we are starving. We are not able to work and feed our families," said Larry Miller, president of the Street Vendors Association.

The city unions have also criticized Reed because the majority of those workers had not enjoyed a raise until recently, despite city council giving itself a 50 percent raise. Workers received a 3.5 percent increase after years of not having a raise.

"I like to come to a job that I know I'm going to keep and if providing raises puts me in a position that I know I'm going to have to throw people out of the boat to pay for those raises, I think we have to be really cautious," said Reed.

All that said, Reed has been consistent in saying that there is plenty of work left to do.

Reed said he hopes that his announcement ends the speculation about his desire for higher office. The mayor said being the mayor of Atlanta is his dream job and that wants four more years.
